According to the American Psychological Association, Test Anxiety is apprehension and fear of the consequences of being unable to perform a task or of performing it at a level that will raise expectations of even better task achievement. It is an example Performance Anxiety- fear of public speaking, participating in classes or meetings, playing a musical instrument in public, and eating in public.

  • Leads to procrastination and low self-confidence.

  • Elevated levels of anxiety before exams.
  • More prone to achieving unsatisfactory results.
  • Low self-efficacy, doubting their abilities.
  • Feeling unprepared for exams.

  1. Physical Symptoms: Such as rapid heartbeat, sweating, nausea, or headaches before or during a test. 
  2. Behavioral Signs: Like fidgeting, restlessness, avoiding studying or tests, or feeling irritable.
  3. Cognitive Signs: Such as difficulty concentrating, negative thoughts about performance, or blanking out during exams.
  4. Emotional Signs: Including fear, worry, or feeling overwhelmed specifically related to test-taking situations.

Research says reducing test anxiety can lead to improved academic performance.

Time Management Skills:

  • Set goals and estimate completion time. Ask Students to practice mock tests to manage their time and get used to the test-taking experience. Studies show that students in higher grades have comparatively low test anxiety.

Teach Relaxation Techniques:

  • Visualisation: Ask students to imagine a calm place or a successful test-taking experience.
  • Deep Breathing: Practise the 4-7-8 technique (inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7 seconds, exhale for 8 seconds).

Promote Healthy Anxiety Views:

  • Teach students that moderate anxiety can facilitate performance. A moderate amount of anxiety helps students in preparation.

It’s vital for teachers to identify signs of test anxiety in their students and offer proactive support. By fostering a calm classroom environment and teaching relaxation techniques, teachers can help students manage their anxiety. Encouraging students to seek professional help when necessary ensures they receive the comprehensive care they need for their mental well-being.
